Manchester United desperately needs a natural defensive midfielder in their starting XI, and they have been searching for one since last summer. But still, they have not found a great player who can be a vital part of their future. When the season began, everyone expected a transfer in that position, and Ole was also pushing for a player. Unfortunately, it did not happen. The former manager played Fred in that position, and the Brazilian midfielder’s performance was subpar.

When Ralf Rangnick was appointed, he gave the freedom for Fred to play in his natural position. His performance also improved when he was allowed to contribute more to the attack.

Manchester United needs a player who has the natural abilities of a defensive midfielder. Only by doing so they can solve some issues in their game. The lack of such a player is very much visible in their games.

Let’s have a look at some options that the Red Devils should target on the upcoming transfer window who can fill the gap of a DMF:

Declan Rice:

Declan Rice has been one of the main targets of the Reds Devils since the beginning of last season. His rapid rise and performance under David Moyes in West Ham United have attracted United, and he will be their first choice in the defensive midfield option.

Declan Rice is one of the most talented players in the Premier League. His work rate is immense, and United lacks a player who can be the connecting bridge between the defence and attack.

The only issue in front of the management will be the asking price. West Ham has increased their asking price to around 100 million pounds, and United is hesitant to pay an enormous amount after spending a lot for Sancho.

Frank Kessie

The 24-year-old defensive midfielder scored 14 goals and provided six assists after playing as a DMF last season for AC Milan. Signing him can be worked out as he is going to be a free agent at the end of this season. He has already confirmed that he will not renew his contract.

But United will face massive competition from other top clubs as Kessie is a man in demand. If they manage to give the salary he is asking, it’s a great deal for the Red Devils.

Marcelo Brozovic

Marcelo Brozovic was one of the key figures behind Inter Milan’s success last campaign. He is another player whose contract is ending at the end of this season. He was a vital part of Antonio Conte’s squad when they managed to win the Serie A last season.

Wilfred Ndidi

Manchester United should target him as one of the best options in the defensive midfield position mainly because of his experience in the Premier League, and the asking price will be much lesser than that of Declan Rice.
