Player Ratings

Manchester United were comfortable 1-0 winners against Watford on the last day of the season, on what was an opportunity for fans to show their appreciation for Michael Carrick, who is retiring at the end of the season to join the coaching staff at United. There were also songs in support of Sir Alex Ferguson, who continues to recover from his brain haemorrhage in hospital, and it was somewhat fitting that it was Carrick’s inch-perfect through pass that created United’s goal. It was a good day out for the fans, and an important win before the FA Cup final next weekend.

Here are how the players fared in the last league game of the season:

GK: Sergio Romero (6) – Given a rare start as David de Gea was rested, the Argentinian made an error early on when he dropped a routine cross, but fortunately no Watford players were on hand to capitalise. Made a good save from a point-blank header right before half-time, and was barely troubled afterwards

RB: Matteo Darmian (6) – Solid but unspectacular from the Italian, who has probably played his last game for the club

CB: Eric Bailly (6) – Showed why he is considered United’s best defender, with a comfortable afternoon shepherding Watford’s attackers. Lovely bit of skill on the edge of his own box brought the United fans to their feet

CB: Marcos Rojo (6) – Was his usual all-action self, which may have resulted in a few reckless challenges, but managed to make some crucial interventions, none more so than with a sliding tackle that prevented a certain goal with 10 minutes to go

LB: Ashley Young (6) – Quiet outing for Young, who nevertheless made some important tackles

CM: Michael Carrick (7) – He played a glorious ball to Mata to open the scoring for United, and was his usual calm, composed self at the back of midfield. Got a well-deserved ovation when he was taken off

CM: Scott McTominay (6) – Another workmanlike performance from McTominay, who ran hard, played a few good passes forward and made a couple of clearances

CM: Daley Blind (6) – This was Blind’s first start in the league since August, and he was good with the ball, with one impressive pass forward creating a chance for Rashford

RW: Juan Mata (7) – One of his better displays in recent weeks. Constantly involved and looking to create, he set up the opener for Rashford on a plate, and should have got another assist earlier with a glorious cross for Sanchez

LW: Alexis Sanchez (6) – Unlucky with an early opportunity to score, but worked hard to try and create another opening after that

CF: Marcus Rashford (7) – Got into some good positions throughout the game, but was caught offside too often. Good movement to set himself up for the opener, and worked tirelessly throughout the game

LB: Luke Shaw (6) – Came on with half an hour to play, and had a quiet outing

CM: Ander Herrera (N/A) – Came on for Blind, and almost set up a goal with a decent cross

CM: Paul Pogba (N/A) – On for Carrick right at the end

Man of the Match – Michael Carrick

On his last ever appearance as a professional footballer, it was fitting that Michael Carrick showed everyone just why he will be missed so much by the United faithful. Carrick ran the game, controlling the tempo of passing, while his delightful through ball set up Rashford’s goal as well. His departure marks the end of an era at Old Trafford, as the last member of the 2008 Champions League-winning side still playing for United, and while he does join the coaching staff next season, there is a big hole in midfield that now needs to be filled by Jose Mourinho.
