Most of Manchester United’s problems this season has been centered on not having a strong attacking force. The problem is between the midfield not being able to link up efficiently with the forwards. This has been a matter of serious concern for the team.

Manchester United have played 12 matches in the league this season and have only scored four goals from midfield. This is saddening, especially for a club that used to be aggressive in attack.

Some contributing factors to this problem are injuries to some key players in the team and the lack of squad depth. Nemanja Matic has not been in his best form for a while now and with the doubts over Paul Pogba’s future in the club, the Red Devils doesn’t seem to have much of an option than to look out and bring in players when the transfer window resumes in January.

A likely option that can fit perfectly into the Manchester United squad is 22-year-old Newcastle United midfielder, Sean Longstaff.

The Daily Telegraph claims there is a ‘growing possibility’ that Matic will be allowed to move on in January but that will be depending solely on whether Ole Gunnar can sign a replacement.

Let’s take a look at the 22-year-old English midfielder and see whether he is the right choice for the United squad.

Sean Longstaff has played a total of 17 matches for Newcastle United, scoring one goal and so averaging a total of 0.06 goals per match. He has 15 shots and five shots on target with a 33% shooting accuracy. He has one assist, 580 passes, averaging 34.12 passes per match, and three big chances created.

He has a total of 20 crosses with a 40% cross accuracy, one through ball and 43 accurate long balls.

On the defence, he has a total of 29 tackles with a 69% tackle success, four blocked shots, and 19 interceptions. He also has 16 clearances, four headed clearances, 80 recoveries, 68 duels won, seven successful 50/50 and 17 aerial battles won (Premier League stat).

His stats are impressive and he seems like a player who can thrive with the right environment to develop.

Is Sean Longstaff the right choice for Manchester United?

Sean Longstaff isn’t gathering much popularity among the Manchester United fanbase but for those who have watched him play and observed his game well, they will agree that Longstaff is an asset.

Not to mention his brief spell in his side’s win against Manchester City in a match that ended 2-1 in January, he is an adept passer off both wings and he is combative without the ball. He will definitely be an upgrade in the Red Devils’ midfield.

Unlike the lightweight Andreas Pereira, he drives forward with the ball even more than the dynamically rigid Nemanja Matic, and he is not one-footed like Fred.

Let’s also mention that he is in the early days of his career with a lot of room for improvement.

Conclusion

Bearing in mind that Sean Longstaff is young and with a lot of potential, he will make a great addition to the Manchester United squad should they end up signing him. All he just needs is an environment that can help him develop his skills and Old Trafford seems like the right place for that.
