PLAYER OF THE YEAR REVEALED
There were no surprises when it came to this one as David De Gea won his fourth Matt Busby Player of the Year Award and third Players’ Player of the Year Award. It was the third time the Spaniard has won the double of the Player of the Year Awards. He reclaims the title after Ander Herrera broke his streak of three consecutive victories at the end of last season.
The Player of the Year awards were not the only awards being given away as Demetri Mitchell collected the Denzel Haroun Reserve Team Player of the Year. Though currently sidelined by injury, Mitchell had a successful year individually and had a promising loan spell at Hearts in Scotland before injury cut short his tenure there.
Promising youngster Tahith Chong won the Young Player of the Year Award following up Angel Gomes’ win last season. Chong has been one of the brightest sparks in United’s dismal under 23 team and is reportedly close to a debut prior to the end of the campaign. Chong has shown no signs of the ligament injury he suffered over a year back.
Nemanja Matic’s effort in the win over Crystal Palace won the Goal of the Season award. It beat out goals from the likes of Valencia, Martial and Rashford comfortably.
In a surprise award given out this season, Scott McTominay was given the Manager’s Player of the Season Award. The Award to the young Scot is a recognition of the impression he has made on the current crop of established players and Mourinho.
Michael Carrick was given a Special Award in recognition of his services to the club as he prepares to retire after a trophy-laden career. Carrick will take his place in Mourinho’s coaching team at the end of this season as he completes 12 years as a United player.
POGBA AND MOURINHO UP FOR LEAGUE AWARDS
Paul Pogba’s performances for the month of April has seen the Frenchman nominated for the Player of the Month award. Pogba put in impressive performances all throughout the month as he stood out with a brace against City and then followed it up with another big game performance against Arsenal. He also got an assist against Bournemouth and had an impressive return in front of goal. Pogba faces competition from the likes of Jake Livermore, Raheem Sterling, Wilfred Zaha and Christian Eriksen.
Mourinho has also been nominated for the Manager of the Month Award alongside the likes of Pep Guardiola and Darren Moore. Mourinho had a successful month as he picked up wins over City, Bournemouth and Arsenal. West Brom was the only team to take points off of United this month.
DARMIAN AND BLIND ON THE WAY OUT
Reports from inside the club suggest that fringe players Matteo Darmian and Daley Blind will leave the club in the summer. The latest to suggest that plans to offload the already in place are that both players were left out of a recent photo-shoot with next season’s jerseys. Darmian has been linked with a potential move to Juventus while Blind is on the way back to Ajax per the back pages.
