In the last transfer window, England star defender, Harry Maguire joined Manchester United from Leicester City in a world-record fee of £80 million, making him the most expensive defender in the world.

But how has Maguire performed so far this season?

Harry has no doubt been a positive addition to the United team. The Englishman has been committed and hard-working, willing to give his all and seems unfazed by the stature of the club he is playing for.

The 26-year-old defender had a nice debut in the match against Chelsea that ended in a 4-0 win for the Reds.

While he had an average performance in the match, it was forgiveable with so much pressure on him being the most expensive defender. To that effect, he was more focused on playing safe and face his job squarely.

Maguire started the match on the left side of the central defence and occasionally swapped with his partner, Victor Lindelof.

He was kept on his toes most times, with Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount, threatening to tear up the defence, but he kept calm and did well in preventing them from scoring any goal.

He also made little errors when called upon to help Luke Shaw block a cross coming from Cesar Azpilicueta which almost resulted in a goal for the Blues.

He won 75 per cent of his aerial duel and completed 47 out of 59 passes. Maguire was given the ‘Man of the Match’ later on.

The match against Wolves did not go according to plan as the game ended in a 1-1 draw. The 26-year-old was dribbled for the first time since he joined Manchester United by Raul Jimenez, a little embarrassing moment for the Englishman and disappointing when you consider that the former most expensive defender of last season Virgil Van Djik was not dribbled passed by any player throughout the season.

He, however, had an average performance in general.

The third match was against Crystal Palace and was the first loss of the club this season. Maguire, however, has never experienced a victory against the Eagles since he has been playing in the Premier League.

His flaws became as obvious as he performed badly in the match. With Jeff Schlupp beating Victor Lindelof to the ball in the air, Jordan Ayew immediately exploited Maguire’s slack positioning and shot the ball past David de Gea. His mistake contributed to United’s loss.

The 26-year-old defender played well against Southampton as he was one of the best players on the pitch aside Juan Mata.

With just few matches so far he has shown so many weaknesses already that has affected the club.

One of the main causes of shortcomings might be the fact that he is under pressure as he is the current most expensive defender in the world and trying to play safe.

With that huge amount spent, the club and the fans expect a lot from him to always deliver.

Also, his partner, Lindelof, has been more of a disadvantage for him. The Swedish player has been below par this season with too many errors made.

The England defender has a lot of work to do as he is the only reliable defender currently in the club.

He needs less mistakes and more delivery in order to make United better, defence-wise and help them move forward this season.
