With Luke Shaw’s recent injury, the left-back position will be an issue for Manchester United.
The last game against Southampton ended in a 1-1 draw and United’s captain, Ashley Young, played the left-back position but did not meet expectations.
The 34-year-old is the next available choice for the role and though he has a lot of experience having been with the club since 2011, Ashley Young needs to step down and let the younger lads play.
Marcos Rojo will be a better choice than the England defender for that position.
The Argentine defender, who joined Manchester United in 2014 might not have had a smooth career due to a series of injuries since he joined United, but with all that now behind him he might be a better option to cover for Shaw than Young.
Marcos, who signed a contract extension last season which will keep him in the club till 2021, has previously stated that the manager had told him that he was part of his plans when Solskjaer was appointed on a temporary basis.
This is definitely the right time for Ole to make good of his words to Marcos.
How does he fit in?
Rojo’s style of play would fit in perfectly with this new game plan, as he is a dedicated and hardworking player – which is what the team needs right now.
The Argentine defender has quite the pace that can help Daniel James up front in the left-wing and will receive adequate cover from the centrebacks when he makes those runs upfield.
With a fast left-back like Rojo, it would be a lot easier for United’s attack on the left-wing, as he will provide cover and give long balls down the wing for Daniel James which will come in handy during counter-attacks. His energy level is also very high and will be greatly needed to compete in the very high-tempo Premier League.
Manchester United, right now, cannot afford any shortcomings. The team has to give all they’ve got. And if Marcos is played in the left-back position, United will have a great boost at the back that will help the team a lot this season.
