5 players United should sign this summer

The summer transfer window is finally open, a notorious time for us United fans, as we once again prepare to be linked with every name under the sun.

The previous two windows didn’t disappoint. Last summer, United welcomed the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic, and the summer before that, the Red Devils secured the then world-record signing of Paul Pogba.

All three of those names have proven crucial in the United squad. But manager Jose Mourinho along with United fans are still adamant that more names need to be brought in to improve the side.

With that in mind, I have compiled a list of stars that I think will improve our team. Unlike the signing of Alexis Sanchez, these names are more geared towards catering to the squad’s needs, as opposed to the United brand’s.

5. Ousmane Dembele

Probably the wildcard of this list. Mainly because Dembele has only just joined Barcelona, but also because it depends on if Jose decides to play either of Alexis Sanchez or Anthony Martial on the right.

If so, then United do not need to sign another winger this summer. But if for some reason Jose does find a way to play both Martial and Sanchez in the same team, then the right wing is certainly an area in need of buffing.

United have been linked with both Willian and Gareth Bale (I know, surprise) again this window, but both stars are fast approaching 30.

On the other hand, Dembele has only just turned 21, and despite his age, the Frenchman has shown maturity unlike most of his contemporaries.

Although, struggles with injury and the arrival of Phillippe Coutinho have caused Dembele to fall out of favour at the Nou Camp.

Reports suggest that Barca are willing to send the talented winger out on loan next season, so why not go in for him?

4. Djibril Sidibe

Becoming an integral part of Monaco’s defence – and being a standout star in a side that has rapidly grown into a French football juggernaut – Djibril Sidibe is no stranger to being linked with a move to the Premier League.

As the likes of Bernardo Silva, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Kylian Mbappe, and more earned themselves moves to top European clubs, Sidibe stayed to hone his craft at the Red and Whites.

The 25-year-old is just as capable going forward as he is in defence. His seven assists in Ligue 1 this year is more than both Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia combined.

With Antonio Valencia’s dwindling form, he could inject a new lease of life into the right-back role. And with Matteo Darmian’s inevitable departure, United will need another man who can fill the position.

3. Fred

Both of these signings are dependant on the other. If one of them joins, it’s hard to imagine the other will follow suit.

At this very moment, it looks as though the signing of Shakhtar’s Brazilian midfielder Fred is close to being confirmed.

The 25-year-old has gained exposure through his dominant displays in midfield, proving his worth in attack as well as defence – particularly during Shakhtar’s 2-1 win over Manchester City in the Champions League.

Fred would be the ideal candidate to complete United’s midfield three, becoming the box-to-box workhouse to compliment Matic and Pogba.

We’ve all seen the talent factory Shakhtar has become in recent years. Just look at Fernandinho as an example of a player who has used the club as a stepping stone for greater things. Fred has all the ability to follow that pattern.

2. Alex Sandro

The left-back has been an area of relative weakness at Manchester United for a number of seasons now.

Thought the signing of Luke Shaw offered hope for the position going forward, though the youngster has not really been given ample opportunity since.

Ashley Young has been decent for the Red Devils this season, but there are still better options out there.

Alex Sandro is another player who is no stranger to being linked with a move to the Premier League, having been linked to joining Chelsea last summer.

The 27-year-old has scored four goals and assisted five for Juventus this season, and his featured further up the left-wing as well as in defence. Making him ideal for if Jose wanted to consistently play three-at-the-back.

1. Toby Alderweireld

Under Mauricio Pochettino at Spurs, Toby Alderweireld has quickly become one of the best centre-halves in all of the Premier League.

Much like United’s Eric Bailly, Alderweireld has been sidelined with injury for a large portion of this season, appearing in just 21 games in all competitions this season.

The centre of defence has been a confusing entity this season for United.

While some stars such as Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly, and Marcos Rojo have put in some solid performances, Jose still seems to favour the partnership of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones in big games.

Alderweireld would immediately become United’s star man in defence on arrival, and the idea of a partnership between him and Bailly is one that excites fans greatly.

Furthermore, David De Gea would finally have another competent defender in front of him, which could prove crucial in next season’s title race.
