Who is Anthony Martial?

Anthony Jordan Martial, commonly known as Anthony Martial, is a French professional footballer who plays as a centre-forward for Premier League club Manchester United.

France international was born on 5 December 1995 in Massy. Anthony spent his youth years with the French team Les Ulis from 2001, the same club who produced Thierry Henry and Patrice Evra.

At only 14 years old in 2009, Martial was spotted by scouts from the Lyon academy and joined it the same year.

The French forward made his professional debut for Les Gones in winter 2012, in a Europa League group stage game with Hapoel Ironi Kiryat Shmona.

In summer 2013, Monaco announced they had signed Anthony to a three-year deal for a fee of €5m-plus bonuses.

On 1 September 2015, the French forward completed a move to Man United for £36m, possibly rising to £58m, on a four-year deal with the option of another year.

The 25-year-old forward made his debut in the Derby at Old Trafford on 12 September as a 65th-minute substitute for Juan Mata and scored the final goal of a 3–1 victory over Liverpool.

In winter 2019, Anthony signed a new five-year deal with the Red Devils.

What is Anthony Martial’s international career like?

Anthony scored five goals as Les Bleus topped their qualification group for the 2012 UEFA European Under-17 Championship.

The French forward played all five matches for Les Bleus U19 at the 2013 European Championship in Lithuania, finishing as runners-up to Serbia.

Martial was one of five French footballers selected in the Team of the Tournament.

In summer 2015, Anthony was called up to the senior Les Bleus team for the first time for friendly games with Portugal and Serbia in the following month.

On 11 October, Anthony made his first start for France in a 2–1 victory over Denmark at Parken Stadium, Copenhagen, and assisted the opening goal by Olivier Giroud.

Due to Anthony’s displays in the 2015–2016 campaign with Man United, the forward earned a spot on Les Bleus’ 23-man team for Euro 2016, in which France were the competition runners up.

On 17 May 2018, Anthony was named on the standby list for the 23-man Les Bleus team for the 2018 Mundial in Russia.

However, Martial did not make the final squad for the competition, which saw Les Bleus as champions for the second time.

Anthony plays in style similar to former Arsenal forward Thierry Henry, with speed and technical ability both in wide positions and upfront.
